Algeria and Chad advance trans-Saharan highway project with key road segments

High-level Algerian delegation inspects trans-Saharan highway progress in N’Djamena

The Algerian Minister of Public Works and Basic Infrastructure, Abdelkader Djellaoui, launched a two-day official visit to N’Djamena, Chad, on Wednesday, leading a high-ranking delegation to assess the implementation of joint infrastructure projects, particularly the trans-Saharan highway.

The visit follows directives from Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and aligns with the outcomes of the recent state visit by the Chadian head of state to Algeria. Both nations are committed to turning bilateral cooperation into tangible, actionable progress that drives economic development across the region.

Upon arrival at Hassan Djamous International Airport in N’Djamena, Djellaoui was greeted by Chad’s Minister of Infrastructure, Road Unblocking, and Maintenance, Amir Idriss Kourda, alongside other senior officials.

The Algerian delegation includes over 14 experts and engineers, on their second mission to Chad to advance technical assessments initiated during their previous visit. Key figures in the delegation include the CEOs of Cosider Travaux Publics, the National Public Works Company (SNTP), and the Director-General of the National Technical Control Organization for Public Works (CTTP).

Strategic infrastructure cooperation takes center stage

Public works remain a cornerstone of Algerian-Chadian relations, serving as a vital engine for economic integration. Algeria places significant emphasis on the trans-Saharan highway project, which is poised to create a lasting economic link between the two countries and the broader region.

The current visit focuses on advancing two critical sections of the highway within Chad, identified as essential links in this continental corridor. Leveraging Algeria’s extensive experience in constructing large-scale road projects—particularly in desert environments—the nation is contributing technical expertise and engineering solutions designed to transform regional trade dynamics and foster sustainable connectivity.

Next steps for Algerian-Chadian infrastructure collaboration

The meetings are expected to yield concrete outcomes, solidifying cooperation in infrastructure and public works. These efforts aim to strengthen economic ties and enhance regional stability through improved transport networks.
