Bénin and Niger lift barriers to boost bilateral ties

On June 2, Cotonou and Niamey reaffirmed their commitment to deepen collaboration across multiple sectors during an official visit by Beninese President Romuald Wadagni to Niger, at the invitation of his counterpart, Abdourahamane Tiani.

A joint statement released after the meetings underscored the leaders’ shared conviction that strengthening political, economic, scientific, and cultural ties is essential. They agreed to intensify mutual exchanges, particularly by reinstating the regular sessions of the Niger-Benin Joint Cooperation Commission.

The Presidents emphasized their dedication to eliminating all hurdles blocking stronger bilateral cooperation, with a primary focus on reopening the Benin-Niger border. This long-closed frontier had been a major obstacle, stifling human movement and local trade between the two nations.

To turn these commitments into action, both leaders established an expert committee tasked with identifying existing barriers and proposing viable solutions within a strict 15-day deadline.

The discussions between Wadagni, Tiani, and their delegations unfolded in a highly positive atmosphere, enabling a thorough review of shared challenges and key regional and global issues.

The two heads of state praised the long-standing ties of friendship and cooperation binding Niger and Benin. They reaffirmed their shared determination to elevate bilateral relations to meet the aspirations of their peoples, who seek peace, security, and progress.

President Wadagni, sworn in on May 24, has prioritized restoring harmonious relations with neighboring countries. He extended an official invitation to President Tiani to reciprocate the visit to Benin.
