Benin bolsters emergency healthcare with 600 new oxygen concentrators

A major boost for respiratory care in Benin

The Beninese medical sector has reached a significant milestone in its modernization journey. Professor Benjamin Hounkpatin, the Minister of Health, recently presided over the reception of 600 cutting-edge oxygen concentrators. This new equipment is destined to upgrade the technical resources of 23 health facilities across the nation.

Advanced technology to support life-saving interventions

This vital acquisition was made possible through UNICEF, with financial backing from the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China. Representing an investment of more than 205,450 USD (about 116 million CFA francs), these “10LPM single flow” concentrators are designed to provide a reliable and steady flow of oxygen to patients suffering from acute respiratory distress.

The distribution of these units will prioritize 23 clinics and hospitals located in the following departments:

  • Alibori
  • Littoral
  • Atacora
  • Borgou
  • Donga
  • Couffo
  • Atlantique

Reducing maternal and infant mortality

According to Minister Hounkpatin, this initiative is a key component of a broader strategy to decrease mortality rates among mothers and newborns. He highlighted that the availability of medical oxygen is a fundamental requirement for ensuring that every citizen has access to premium healthcare services.

Strengthening international health cooperation

The official ceremony was attended by the Chinese Ambassador, H.E. Wei Zhang, and the UNICEF Resident Representative, Ousmane Niang. The Ambassador reaffirmed China’s commitment to supporting Benin’s health sector. Meanwhile, the UNICEF representative pointed out that these devices, funded by individual donors in China, will greatly improve the ability of the Beninese health system to manage critical emergencies.

This upgrade reflects the government’s ongoing dedication to enhancing national medical infrastructure and providing more efficient public health services.
