Benin makes history with first female aide-de-camp to president

In a groundbreaking move for Benin’s political and military landscape, Captain Elvire Toupé has been appointed as aide-de-camp to President Romuald Wadagni, marking a historic milestone in the nation’s governance.

The announcement followed the first Council of Ministers meeting of May 2026 at the Palais de la Marina, where the officer’s presence alongside the Head of State drew significant attention. Traditionally reserved for senior male officers, this strategic role has now been entrusted to a woman for the first time in Benin’s history.

The aide-de-camp serves as a vital link between the president and official duties, overseeing protocol arrangements, security coordination, and logistical support during state functions and international engagements. Beyond its operational significance, this appointment reflects a progressive shift in the representation of women in high-ranking military and state positions.

Benin’s decision aligns with a broader regional trend in West Africa, where neighboring nations are increasingly recognizing the capabilities of female officers in defense and security sectors. The move underscores the country’s commitment to gender equality and inclusive leadership at the highest levels of government.
