Burkina Faso and Serbia deepen defense and security ties with new cooperation talks

Ouagadougou and Belgrade are taking concrete steps to strengthen their bilateral relationship, with a focus on defense, security, and professional training. A high-level delegation of Serbian lawmakers, led by Slavenko Ristic, President of the Defense and Security Commission of the Serbian Parliament and CEO of Tehnicki Remont Bratunac, paid an official visit to Burkina Faso on June 3, 2026. The delegation was received by Burkina Faso’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Cooperation, and Burkinabè Abroad, Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré, and his deputy, Bêbgnasgnan Stella Eldine Kabré/Kaboré.

The purpose of the visit was to explore new avenues for collaboration, particularly in areas critical to both nations’ priorities. During the discussions, both sides highlighted the potential for mutually beneficial partnerships in defense equipment, joint training programs, and capacity-building initiatives.

Slavenko Ristic emphasized the strategic importance of Africa in global geopolitics and underscored Serbia’s ambition to play a more active role on the continent. “The vision of Burkina Faso’s leadership is widely respected and serves as an inspiration in my country,” he stated. He went on to say, “Africa represents the future, and Serbia is determined to be part of that future.”

On his part, Minister Traoré welcomed Serbia’s proactive engagement, calling it a clear sign of growing interest in Burkina Faso. He stressed that both countries still have untapped potential for deeper collaboration, especially in sectors where Serbian expertise could complement Burkina Faso’s needs.

Minister Traoré also outlined Burkina Faso’s commitment to diversifying its international partnerships, with a strategic focus on Eastern European countries. “We are actively seeking reliable partners to build sustainable, win-win relationships,” he explained. He further invited the Serbian delegation to help improve European understanding of African realities by bringing these perspectives to policymakers in Brussels and other European capitals.

In response, Slavenko Ristic pledged to champion Burkina Faso’s interests and broader African priorities within European decision-making circles, aiming to foster more balanced and equitable cooperation between the two continents.

This meeting signals a new chapter in Burkina Faso–Serbia relations, as Ouagadougou continues to expand its diplomatic outreach to strengthen strategic alliances outside traditional Western partners.
