Cameroon on autopilot, says lawyer Mustapha Ngouana

Mustapha Ngouana says Cameroon has grown used to unfulfilled promises and broken commitments.

During the “Right of Reply” programme on Equinoxe Television, Mustapha Ngouana described a recurring pattern of unmet pledges in Cameroon.

“The President of the Republic of Cameroon has repeatedly taken decisions whose deadlines were never respected. Let’s look at a few facts. For the Africa Cup of Nations, the president said the tournament would be held on the appointed day — it was not. The president had 50 years to prepare the fiftieth anniversary of reunification; it was supposed to be celebrated in 2011, but it took place in 2014,” Mustapha Ngouana wrote during the programme.

The debate’s theme was “Broken Trust: Public Opinion Facing Unkept Promises.” Mustapha Ngouana addressed this by highlighting what he called “permanent missteps” in the head of state’s governance.

“I believe the president is in a state of permanent missteps in his governance. Our country is at a standstill. When people even speak of poor governance, I think they are being kind — in reality, it is non-governance. Cameroon is on autopilot.”
