CEDEAO and un women launch regional gender and green economy program in Abidjan

Abidjan — In a landmark move for West African sustainability, the ECOWAS Centre for Gender Development (CCDG), alongside UN Women and multiple specialized ECOWAS agencies, has officially endorsed a groundbreaking regional initiative. The program integrates gender equality, climate action, and the green economy, marking a significant step toward a more resilient and inclusive future across member states.

The initiative was validated during a high-level gathering held on May 15–16 at the ECOWAS Resident Representation in Côte d’Ivoire. The event focused on finalizing the strategic framework of the program and outlining a clear implementation roadmap to ensure its success.

aligning climate goals with gender equity

The newly approved program is designed to strengthen regional efforts in addressing the pressing priorities of ECOWAS member countries. Its core objectives include bolstering gender mainstreaming, enhancing climate resilience, and accelerating the transition to a green economy. Additionally, the initiative will provide critical financial support to advance the ECOWAS Gender and Climate Action Plan, reinforcing the bloc’s commitment to sustainable development.

Speaking at the event, Sandra Oulaté Fattoh, Director of the CCDG, emphasized the dual nature of the ecological transition—both a challenge and an opportunity—for women and girls across West Africa. She highlighted the program’s potential to create pathways for economic empowerment while ensuring no one is left behind in the shift toward greener practices.

Adjaratou Fatou Ndiaye, UN Women’s Resident Representative in Côte d’Ivoire, framed the initiative as a pivotal moment where policy commitments are translated into tangible action. She noted that the program directly responds to the urgent need for concrete solutions to climate and economic challenges gripping the region.

Dr. Kalilou Sylla, ECOWAS Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Agriculture, underscored the importance of an inclusive green transition. He called for policies that not only prioritize environmental sustainability but also create real economic opportunities for women and youth, ensuring their active participation in shaping a sustainable future.

next steps: adoption and implementation

The final version of the program is set to be adopted during a working session scheduled for June 29 to July 6, 2026, in Lomé, Togo. This milestone will pave the way for coordinated action across the region, with member states aligning their national strategies to meet shared goals of gender equity and environmental stewardship.
