In a sharply worded statement released on May 6, Chad’s bishops voiced grave concerns over the country’s deteriorating political climate. The prelates emphasized that genuine, inclusive dialogue remains the only viable path to resolving the current impasse. “Sincere and broad-based discussion is essential to restore trust and rebuild social cohesion,” they declared.
Condemning intercommunal violence
The bishops’ statement echoes recent deadly clashes between communities in Chad, particularly in Dar Tama (Wadi Fira) and Guera. The latest tragedy unfolded on May 5 when an attack on a military base in Barka Toulorom, near Lake Chad, claimed at least 23 lives, according to official government reports. Just days earlier, on April 26, intercommunal violence in eastern Chad left at least 42 dead. The bishops condemned these acts of violence, reaffirming that “no one has the right to take a human life.” They warned that “violence only deepens divisions and fuels further instability.”
Upholding democratic principles and human rights
The bishops also expressed alarm over what they described as a “wave of arrests targeting opposition figures and critical voices.” They argued that such measures undermine Chad’s democratic foundations, erode freedom of expression, and weaken social cohesion. “These actions threaten the very principles of pluralism and human dignity,” they warned. “Exclusion, injustice, and repression cannot pave the way for lasting peace.”
A call for constructive dialogue and national reconciliation
The bishops reiterated their firm belief in dialogue as the cornerstone of reconciliation. “All stakeholders must engage in honest, respectful discussions aimed at finding peaceful solutions,” they urged. Stressing that such dialogue is “vital for healing and sustainable peace,” they called on authorities to foster an environment of trust and restraint. “Peace is a shared responsibility,” they noted, extending condolences to the families of victims and urging solidarity among Chad’s citizens during these challenging times.
