Pitch invasion and smoke bombs force early end to Nantes-Toulouse clash
What was supposed to be a routine season finale turned into chaos as the final whistle never sounded at the Stade de la Beaujoire. The 34th and decisive matchday of Ligue 1 between Nantes and Toulouse was abandoned for good after supporters stormed the pitch and launched smoke bombs onto the playing surface.
The match had barely begun when supporters from the Tribune Loire section breached security and invaded the field during the 22nd minute. With the score locked at 0-0, referee Stéphanie Frappart took immediate action, sending both teams back to the dressing rooms to ensure their safety.
Speaking to the press shortly after, the international referee confirmed the definitive abandonment of the fixture: Due to safety concerns, the match has been definitively abandoned on the prefect’s orders
. The decision came after nearly 40 minutes of deliberation involving local authorities, police forces, club representatives, and match officials.
Security forces struggle to contain crowd
Despite the presence of heavy CRS deployment, isolated scuffles broke out as supporters eventually retreated to their stands. The situation remained tense for several minutes before order was partially restored. Meanwhile, Nantes manager Vahid Halilhodzic remained on the pitch, visibly distressed as he confronted the invading crowd before being restrained by security personnel.
Looking visibly shaken in the corridors moments later, the 74-year-old coach told Ligue 1+ commentators this marked his final coaching session. This hurts me deeply
, he admitted, reflecting the emotional toll the incident took on everyone involved.
Aftermath and disciplinary considerations
Following over 30 minutes of discussions, Frappart and the match delegate addressed the media to confirm the abandonment. Notably, Nantes owner-president Waldemar Kita and his son Franck, the club’s managing director, were absent from the stadium despite having shared a pre-match meal with the players hours earlier.
This incident echoes last season’s abandonment of the Montpellier-Saint-Étienne match after smoke bombs were thrown onto the pitch and into the stands. Montpellier subsequently faced sanctions including a match forfeit and season-long closure of the Étang de Thau stand, home to their ultras.
