Côte d’Ivoire backs Morocco’s Sahara autonomy plan at un seminar
During a regional seminar of the United Nations Committee of 24 (C24) held in Managua, Côte d’Ivoire openly reiterated its unwavering support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative aimed at resolving the long-standing Sahara dispute. The Ivorian delegation emphasized the plan’s legitimacy, noting its alignment with international law principles and alignment with the 2025 UN Security Council Resolution 2797.
The delegation underscored the plan’s broad international backing, highlighting that nearly 130 countries have endorsed the proposal. They stressed that it offers a credible framework for addressing the region’s challenges by empowering local populations in the southern provinces to manage their own political and economic affairs through democratic elections and representation in international bodies.
Human rights and regional concerns addressed
In addition to political autonomy, Côte d’Ivoire commended progress in human rights within the framework of the initiative, particularly through the establishment of regional commissions and collaboration with UN mechanisms. However, the delegation raised concerns about the humanitarian situation in the Tindouf camps, calling for an urgent and transparent population census to ensure accurate representation and assistance.
The Ivorian representatives concluded by reaffirming their commitment to a political solution under the exclusive auspices of the United Nations. They urged all parties involved to adopt a pragmatic and compromise-driven approach to achieve a sustainable resolution.
