Diplomatic rupture between Burkina Faso and France after military coup

France has severed all diplomatic ties with Burkina Faso following a dramatic escalation in tensions between the two nations. The decision comes after Ouagadougou abruptly announced the immediate break in relations, prompting Paris to respond with decisive countermeasures.

In an official statement, the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that all French diplomatic personnel had been withdrawn from Burkina Faso. This move aligns with the principle of reciprocity, as Burkina Faso’s military government had previously demanded the expulsion of France’s ambassador from Ouagadougou.

The rupture follows a series of disputes that have intensified since Captain Ibrahim Traoré assumed power in the West African nation after the September 2022 coup. Burkina Faso’s transitional authorities have increasingly distanced themselves from Western allies, particularly France, accusing Paris of undermining the country’s sovereignty.

France Rejects Allegations of Support for Terrorist Groups

In response to Burkina Faso’s accusations that France backs terrorist organizations, the French government categorically denied the claims as unfounded. Paris emphasized its unwavering stance against terrorism and violence in the Sahel region, reaffirming its commitment to combating extremist threats globally.

The French advisory to its nationals in Burkina Faso urged heightened vigilance, with over 2,000 French citizens currently residing in the country. Meanwhile, more than 6,000 Burkinabè nationals live in France, underscoring the deep social and economic ties between the two nations.

Military Cooperation Collapse and New Alliances

Relations between Burkina Faso and France have deteriorated steadily since 2023, when Ouagadougou expelled France’s ambassador and terminated a military cooperation agreement. The decision also led to the withdrawal of French forces that had been assisting Burkina Faso in its fight against jihadist groups.

In response, Burkina Faso has sought closer partnerships with alternative allies, including Russia, Turkey, and Iran, signaling a strategic shift away from its traditional Western relationships.
