DRC: HRW Slams Excessive Force Used Against Protesters in Kinshasa

Human Rights Watch Condemns Violence in DRC Protests

The international rights group has accused the Congolese security forces of using excessive force against protesters in Kinshasa on June 12, 2026. The protests were held against a bill that could extend President Félix Tshisekedi’s term.

  • Police dispersed protesters with tear gas and batons, but did not stop attacks by members of the Progress Force, a group linked to the ruling party UDPS.
  • Videos confirmed clashes, seat destruction at opposition parties’ offices, and attacks on the ECiDé headquarters where protesters took refuge.
  • Human Rights Watch documented over 10 injuries, including several opposition figures, as well as dozens of arrests. The organization claims some members of the Progress Force were mobilized by UDPS officials to disrupt the protest, a claim rejected by the party.

The Congolese authorities have launched an investigation into the violence, while the UDPS claims the attackers were posing as Progress Force members.

Human Rights Watch is calling for an independent and impartial investigation to bring those responsible to justice.
