Fonsiary land reforms restart in Senegal after sonko’s departure

The long-awaited breakthrough in Senegal’s fonsiary land reforms has finally arrived. A formal government statement released today outlines the resumption of critical land allocation processes that had been frozen for months. The move follows the conclusion of comprehensive audits across key urban zones, signaling a new phase in land governance.

Key sites unlocked
The administrative suspension, which had halted progress on major urban development projects, has been lifted for several high-priority locations. These include:

  • The strategic BOA, Hangar des Pèlerins, Recasement 2, EGBOS, EOGEN and its extension, as well as Mbour IV in Thiès.
  • Detailed Urban Planning (PUD) zones covering Guédiawaye, Yeumbeul-Malika-Tivaouane Peulh, and the New City of Thiès.
  • Urban hubs like Déni Biram Ndao-Diaksao-Bambilor and Daga Kholpa-Yenne.
  • The northern area’s Ndiebène Gandiole site, registered under domanial land title no. 136/SL.

A new direction for land management

With the removal of administrative blockages, the government is prioritizing the swift resolution of legitimate land claims. The statement emphasizes that only applicants with clear, error-free documentation will benefit from this accelerated process. Those holding multiple parcels under questionable circumstances are explicitly excluded from these new measures.

Strict penalties for unauthorized actions
Authorities have issued a stern warning against any attempts to reclaim or develop land without proper authorization. Violations will result in severe penalties, underscoring the government’s commitment to enforcing legal procedures.

To facilitate the transition, affected individuals and communities are urged to contact the Committee Secretariat (via DGSCOS on the VDN or the General Directorate of Urban Planning in Diamniadio) to submit their requests for land title releases or regularizations. This coordinated effort aims to restore confidence in Senegal’s land management system while ensuring equitable access to urban development opportunities.
