Gabon secures vice-presidency at UN’s 81st session

Gabon has been elected as a vice-president during the Tuesday, June 2, 2026 session, joining 21 newly appointed vice-presidents. This milestone signifies the country’s return to the United Nations (UN) General Assembly’s top leadership body after nearly a decade.

The Central African nation will join five other African countries—Cabo Verde, Egypt, Guinea-Bissau, Eritrea, and Zimbabwe—in commencing its one-year term at the start of the 81st UN General Assembly session in September 2026.

As a representative of the African regional group, Gabon’s Permanent Mission to the UN will play a pivotal role in shaping international legislative agendas. Close coordination with newly elected UN President Khalilur Rahman is expected to enhance the country’s diplomatic influence.

During this session, Gabon will take on critical managerial and diplomatic responsibilities. These include overseeing plenary sessions, both regular and high-level, and managing the UN’s agenda. Gabon will also serve on the influential General Committee, responsible for organizing key agenda items, overseeing crucial voting procedures on global resolutions, and aligning institutional priorities.

The Gabonese delegation will collaborate closely with fellow member states to advance the African Group’s key priorities. These include sustainable development, climate action, and reforms within the UN administrative framework.

This achievement aligns with the vision set forth by Gabon’s President, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, reinforcing the country’s commitment to multilateral diplomacy.
