President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema recently welcomed a joint delegation from the African Union and the United Nations. The mission sought to draw insights from Gabon’s exemplary political transition and its ongoing institutional re-foundation efforts. This collaborative engagement specifically aims to bolster the reform process currently underway in Madagascar, under the leadership of President Michaël Randrianirina.

Gabon continues to demonstrate significant progress in its return to constitutional governance. The joint African Union and United Nations mission, co-led by Mohamed Idrissa Farah and Parfait Onanga-Anyanga, engaged directly with Head of State Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema to deliberate on the valuable lessons learned from Gabon’s transition period.

This pivotal meeting forms part of Madagascar’s comprehensive re-foundation initiative. The Indian Ocean nation aims to leverage the Gabonese blueprint, particularly concerning national dialogue frameworks, institutional reform strategies, and the establishment of credible electoral systems.

Gabon’s transition lauded as a stability model

During the discussions, the President of the Republic outlined the fundamental principles that underpinned Gabon’s successful transition. These included a commitment to inclusivity, strict adherence to the established timeline, fostering a participatory national dialogue, and diligently safeguarding peace and social cohesion across the nation.

These guiding principles, according to Gabonese authorities, paved the way for the organization of free and transparent elections, thereby solidifying the nation’s return to constitutional order and the full restoration of its republican institutions.

Madagascar embarks on institutional re-foundation

The AU-UN mission also aligns with the proactive agenda initiated in Antananarivo, where President Michaël Randrianirina is steering a comprehensive re-foundation process. This includes crucial constitutional reforms, an inclusive national dialogue, and the preparation for upcoming electoral milestones.

By choosing Libreville as the venue for these vital exchanges, both the African Union and the United Nations acknowledge Gabon’s commendable achievements. This decision underscores their encouragement for African states undergoing institutional transitions to actively share experiences and best practices, fostering regional stability and democratic progress.
