Granit Xhaka is on the verge of a move to Chelsea after reaching a verbal agreement with the London club. The 33-year-old Swiss midfielder has reportedly settled personal terms, paving the way for a transfer that could see him leave Sunderland for a fee around €30 million.
Details emerging reveal that Chelsea have already contacted Sunderland to negotiate the deal. The move is also being pushed by former Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso, who worked with Xhaka during the 2023–2025 period and is keen to reunite with him.
Xhaka started his professional career at FC Basel before moving to Borussia Mönchengladbach, then Arsenal, Bayer Leverkusen, and finally Sunderland, who signed him for €15 million. Last season, Sunderland impressed by finishing seventh in the Premier League, with Xhaka playing 36 official matches, scoring one goal and providing six assists.
The midfielder still has a contract with Sunderland until mid-2028, and his current market value is estimated at €8 million. Xhaka, a left-footed player with 149 international caps, currently captains Switzerland at the World Cup. He has played every minute of the group stage, helping Switzerland finish top of Group B. They will next face a third-placed team from another group.
