On Wednesday, Algeria’s Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb paid an official visit to Niamey, where he was received by Niger’s President, General Abdourahamane Tiani. The meeting centered on deepening bilateral cooperation across multiple sectors, reflecting the strong historical and strategic ties between the two nations.
The Prime Minister conveyed President Abdelmadjid Tebboune‘s fraternal greetings to his Nigerien counterpart, emphasizing Algeria’s commitment to strengthening solidarity and cooperation between the two countries. The discussions also reviewed the progress of joint initiatives agreed upon during the second session of the Algerian-Nigerien High Joint Commission, held in Niamey last March.
Key topics of the meeting
The leaders examined the implementation of agreements reached during President Tiani‘s state visit to Algeria in February, which had laid the groundwork for enhanced collaboration in energy, infrastructure, and regional stability.
President Tiani expressed his appreciation for Algeria’s support, particularly in the rapid completion of the Algerian-Nigerien solidarity electricity plant—a landmark project that symbolizes the depth of their bilateral partnership. He highlighted the exceptional momentum driving Algerian-Nigerien relations, describing them as a model of South-South cooperation. Both leaders reaffirmed their shared determination to elevate bilateral ties to even higher levels.
The Prime Minister underscored Algeria’s ongoing dedication to advancing cooperation in priority sectors such as energy, hydrocarbons, infrastructure, health, education, digital technology, and transportation. He also stressed the importance of accelerating the implementation of strategic projects to bolster economic development and regional integration.
Regional stability and economic integration
The discussions extended to regional challenges, with both sides stressing the need for continued bilateral coordination to promote peace, security, and stability in the Sahel. The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to working together to address shared concerns and advance mutual interests.
This meeting follows the recent inauguration of the Algerian-Nigerien electricity plant in Niamey, a project that exemplifies the tangible results of close cooperation between the two nations.
