Ivorian education reform targets national languages for stronger learning outcomes

Côte d’Ivoire is advancing a groundbreaking initiative to integrate national languages into its education system. From July 10 to 12, 2026, educators, linguists, and policymakers convened in Grand-Bassam for a pivotal workshop dedicated to refining the draft National Linguistic Education Policy. Under the leadership of Minister of National Education, Literacy, and Technical Training N’Guessan Koffi, the gathering marked a significant step toward preserving cultural heritage while enhancing educational quality.

Preserving linguistic diversity as a foundation for learning

The workshop brought together education officials, language experts, and technical partners to finalize a policy framework that prioritizes national languages in classrooms. Mah Louhan Mamadou, Director of Adult and Non-Formal Education, emphasized the strategic value of this initiative: “Our nation’s linguistic diversity is not just a cultural treasure—it is a powerful tool for improving education when properly harnessed.” The policy aims to make lessons more accessible by aligning instruction with local linguistic realities.

Aligning education with national priorities

Speaking on behalf of the minister, Diomandé Mabintou Cherif, Inspector General of Education, highlighted the broader challenges facing Ivorian schools. “Education systems today must address inequality, inclusion, and the demands of a rapidly changing world,” she noted. “National languages serve as a bridge between traditional knowledge and modern learning, ensuring no student is left behind.” The policy’s finalization is expected to strengthen educational effectiveness while fostering social cohesion.

A cultural and academic milestone

The three-day workshop concluded with a roadmap for implementing the policy, which will guide schools in adopting national languages across curricula. By prioritizing linguistic inclusion, Côte d’Ivoire seeks to improve literacy rates, reduce dropout risks, and empower future generations with tools rooted in their heritage. This reform underscores the country’s commitment to education that reflects its identity and meets the needs of its people.
