Kvaratskhelia’s PSG impact: the winter transfer that redefined the capital club

Paris Saint-Germain have secured their second consecutive UEFA Champions League title, and much of their success this season stems from the arrival of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in January. The Georgian forward, swiftly crowned Player of the Tournament, transformed the club’s fortunes upon leaving Napoli, making his move one of the most talked-about transfers in football history.

The 70 million euro investment paid off handsomely. Though he did not find the net against Arsenal in the final, Kvaratskhelia’s influence remained undeniable. His decisive penalty won for Ousmane Dembélé levelled the match, and his overall performance throughout the knockout stages earned him the Player of the Tournament award. At Parc des Princes, no one questions whether the club regrets splashing out on the Georgian star.

From Napoli to Paris: a transformative arrival

When Paris Saint-Germain secured Kvaratskhelia’s signature in January 2025, they didn’t just add another player to the squad—they reshaped their identity. The Georgian winger arrived with a reputation for dynamism, creativity, and clutch performances in Europe’s biggest games. In less than a year and a half, he has become the face of a reinvigorated PSG, leading them to continental glory and establishing himself as an essential force in Ligue 1.

A winter signing that redefined expectations

Commentators and pundits agree: few transfers in football history have had such an immediate and transformative impact. Speaking to RTL, journalist Dave Appadoo described Kvaratskhelia’s arrival as ‘the Champions League’s answer to a missing piece.’ He remarked, ‘Physically, mentally, technically—he brings something extra to these high-pressure moments. I believe this is the greatest winter transfer of all time.’

Appadoo added, ‘No winter signing has ever made such a difference so quickly. Sure, 70 million euros is a hefty sum, but some clubs have spent just as much without seeing half the impact. Kvara’s influence was instant. This season, there’s no debate: he is PSG’s standout performer.’
