Le Mans FC secures place in French top flight after disciplinary ruling
- Le Mans
The disciplinary committee of France’s professional football league has confirmed Le Mans FC’s victory over Bastia in the final matchday of Ligue 2, securing the club’s return to Ligue 1 after a 16-year absence.
Four days after the dramatic conclusion, the news is official: Le Mans FC is promoted to Ligue 1. The team from Sarthe finished second in the 2025-2026 Ligue 2 season following their 2-0 away win against Bastia on Saturday, May 9. The disciplinary committee of France’s professional football league (LFP) confirmed the scoreline on Wednesday, May 13, validating the result that had been temporarily suspended due to crowd disturbances.
The match officials had halted play after smoke bombs were launched onto the pitch following Le Mans FC’s second goal in stoppage time. The referee indicated shortly after that the game would not resume, but never officially blew the final whistle.
In such cases, the LFP disciplinary committee is responsible for determining the final outcome and any sanctions against clubs whose supporters disrupt matches. Bastia has been handed a three-match penalty: two matches behind closed doors and one suspended, with the first two to be played at their home stadium.
