Defamation lawsuit filed in Dakar over Touba allegations
The heirs of Serigne Touba have taken legal action against Ousmane Sonko, leader of the Pastef party, following remarks he made during the inauguration of his party’s new headquarters. The complaint, officially filed on July 14, 2026 and registered the following day at the Dakar High Court, was submitted by Serigne Modou Maroun Niang and Serigne Mourtalla Bousso.
The plaintiffs argue that Sonko’s statement—alleging that “dirty money” entered the holy city of Touba—directly attacks the moral integrity of the community and its residents. They emphasize that Touba was founded by Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba on principles of faith, honesty, and strict religious adherence, making such claims particularly damaging. The complaint demands an immediate police investigation to clarify the origins of these allegations.
The collective behind the lawsuit has pledged to support the investigation with video evidence, written transcripts, and press clippings to substantiate their claims. If the inquiry determines that Sonko’s statements were unfounded, they are urging prosecutors to pursue legal action for defamation and the dissemination of false information—offenses clearly outlined in the Senegalese Penal Code.
The legal move unfolds against a backdrop of heightened political tensions in Senegal, where relations between the government and religious leaders have come under scrutiny. Financial flows and political rhetoric surrounding Touba, the heart of the Mouride brotherhood, remain a highly sensitive issue across the country. The Dakar prosecutor now faces the task of assessing the complaint’s validity and determining the next steps in an affair already sparking debate within Mouride circles.
