A legal complaint filed against Ousmane Sonko following comments about Touba

A formal complaint has been lodged with the Public Prosecutor at the High Court of Dakar against Ousmane Sonko, the former Prime Minister, current National Assembly President, and leader of the PASTEF party. The complaint was submitted by a group representing the grandchildren of Serigne Touba, who are seeking a formal investigation into remarks made by Mr. Sonko during the inauguration of his party’s headquarters.
The complainants allege that during his speech, Mr. Sonko stated that “dirty money entered the holy city of Touba”. These comments have prompted the filing of legal proceedings, with the group arguing that such statements tarnish the reputation, dignity, and image of Touba and its residents.
The collective, identifying itself as Senegalese citizens, young intellectuals, and economic operators—while also claiming lineage to the founder of Touba—has requested the Prosecutor to initiate an inquiry. They are seeking clarity from Mr. Sonko regarding the meaning of his statements and demanding that he provide evidence supporting his claims. Additionally, they urge the Prosecutor to conduct a thorough investigation to determine the validity of these allegations.
The complainants emphasize that the remarks have caused significant distress within the community, particularly among the residents of Touba, who hold the city in high spiritual and cultural regard. The legal action underscores the sensitivity surrounding discussions about Touba and the reverence with which its inhabitants regard the city.
