Deadly roadside bomb blast on Bamako-Kayes route claims eight lives in Mali

A devastating explosion rocked the Bamako-Kayes highway in western Mali, leaving eight civilians dead and 42 others injured. The blast occurred when a passenger bus struck an improvised explosive device, according to local transport officials. This route has become a frequent target of armed attacks in the region.

The tragic incident unfolded Monday as the bus traveled along this critical transportation corridor. Transport union spokesman Mamadou Kassambara confirmed the casualties, stating that all victims were civilians. The blast’s severity left the vehicle severely damaged and scattered debris across the roadway.

Reaction to the attack varied among observers. While local transport authorities reported eight fatalities, a paramilitary formation operating in Mali cited a lower toll of five dead and over a dozen injured. The group also attributed responsibility for the bombing to the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), an Al-Qaeda affiliate active in the region.

Western Mali continues to face persistent security challenges, with this highway frequently disrupted by armed assaults and roadside bombs. Just two months prior, JNIM coordinated multiple attacks with a predominantly Tuareg rebel movement, according to security sources monitoring the area.
