The Malian transitional leader, General Assimi Goïta, delivered a pivotal address on May 27, 2026, at Koulouba following the Eid al-Adha prayers held at the presidential palace in Bamako. Addressing the Prime Minister, the President of the National Transitional Council, government officials, and accredited diplomats, he publicly expanded the scope of terrorism to encompass media, economic, political, state, and international dimensions.
Unconventional prayer venue due to security concerns
This year’s solemn prayer did not take place at the Bagadadji Grand Mosque, Bamako’s traditional site for official Eid ceremonies. Instead, the banquet hall of Koulouba Palace was repurposed as a prayer space. The ceremony was led by Imam Mahmoud Touré, attached to the presidential mosque, who invoked blessings for peace and stability across Mali.
Addressing multiple fronts in the fight against terrorism
Following the prayers, General Goïta addressed the press, framing Mali as the target of what he termed “multifaceted terrorism.” He emphasized that the pressures facing the country now extend beyond military threats to include manipulated narratives in the media, economic pressures, and foreign political interference. “No amount of fabricated narratives can shake the resolve of the Malian people for peace and sovereignty,” he declared.
The head of state urged citizens to rally behind the Malian Armed Forces and their allies, vowing that military operations would continue until the nation achieves complete pacification. He reaffirmed the irreversibility of the national refoundation project, known as Mali Kura.
Context after recent militant offensives
This address follows a joint offensive by the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (GSIM) and the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) on multiple Malian positions, which resulted in the death of Defense Minister Sadio Camara on April 25, 2026. Since then, transitional authorities have intensified calls for national unity. Aerial and ground operations involving the Malian Armed Forces and the African Corps are ongoing in Ségou, Kidal, and Ménaka regions.
