Manchester City’s title hopes crushed in draw at Bournemouth as Arsenal claim Premier League

Manchester City’s Premier League title ambitions were decisively ended on Tuesday with a frustrating 1-1 draw against Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium. Despite arriving with hopes of cutting Arsenal’s lead to two points before the final matchday, Pep Guardiola’s side fell short in their attempt to deliver a fitting farewell to their departing manager.

The visitors struggled to find their rhythm, possibly unsettled by the media storm surrounding Guardiola’s imminent departure after a decade at the Etihad Stadium. Their performance was further hampered by fatigue following Saturday’s FA Cup final victory over Chelsea. Whatever the reason, City’s first-half display lacked cohesion, and they paid the price when Eli Junior Kroupi opened the scoring with a stunning strike in the 39th minute.

Guardiola’s tactical adjustments at halftime failed to spark a response. Replacing Antoine Semenyo, Bernardo Silva, and Mateo Kovacic—all of whom had underwhelming outings—did little to shift the momentum. Semenyo’s return to his former club proved fruitless, while Kovacic and Silva offered little influence, prompting their early exits.

Bournemouth squandered multiple golden opportunities, but Manchester City were rescued by Erling Haaland’s late equalizer in stoppage time, capitalizing on a defensive lapse. It was too little, too late. The Citizens now face an uncertain future without one of football’s most influential and decorated managers.

Goal ratings: Manchester City players rated against Bournemouth

Goalkeepers and defenders

  • Gigi Donnarumma (7/10): Surprised by Kroupi’s strike but made several crucial saves to keep City in the game.
  • Matheus Nunes (4/10): Bournemouth repeatedly targeted the right-back, exposing him as City’s weakest defensive link.
  • Abdukodir Khusanov (5/10): The Uzbek defender struggled with positioning, contributing to City’s defensive instability.
  • Marc Guéhi (5/10): A tough night for the former Crystal Palace defender, who was consistently outmuscled.
  • Nico O’Reilly (5/10): Uncomfortable in defense and wasted a clear chance when Haaland set him up early in the second half.

Midfielders

  • Rodri (7/10): Provided precise passing and nearly scored himself, hitting the post just before Haaland’s equalizer. However, his usual control was lacking as City’s defense was repeatedly exposed on the counter.
  • Mateo Kovačić (3/10): A disappointing display from the Croatian, who offered neither defensive stability nor attacking influence. Substituted at halftime.
  • Bernardo Silva (4/10): Normally a key player in high-stakes matches, the Portuguese midfielder failed to make an impact and was withdrawn before the hour mark.

Forwards

  • Antoine Semenyo (5/10): Created a good chance for Doku early on but saw a well-placed effort ruled out for offside. His struggles at Wembley seemed to follow him, leading to his early substitution.
  • Erling Haaland (8/10): Delivered a sublime through ball to Semenyo, though the Ghanaian slightly misjudged the timing. His deep run was wasted by O’Reilly’s hesitation, but he made the most of his first clear chance in stoppage time.
  • Jeremy Doku (5/10): Showed glimpses of brilliance with a skillful dribble inside the box, but his shot lacked power. He held onto the ball frequently without creating real danger and was replaced late in the game.

Substitutes and manager

  • Rayan Cherki (5/10): Should have started the game but failed to make a significant impact in over 30 minutes on the pitch.
  • Phil Foden (5/10): Recovered some form compared to last week’s display against Crystal Palace, but his substitute appearance lacked the creativity City desperately needed.
  • Savinho (5/10): Swapped in for Semenyo but didn’t provide a decisive contribution.
  • Omar Marmoush (N/A): Brought on for Doku in the final 15 minutes.
  • Pep Guardiola (4/10): A frustrating end to his tenure. His decision to field Kovacic over Cherki proved costly, and despite bold substitutions at halftime, he couldn’t turn the tide. A subdued finish to his Premier League title campaign.
