FC Nantes handed empty-stadium ban for next three Ligue 2 matches
The disciplinary committee has confirmed the 0-0 draw against Toulouse and slapped the club with sanctions after last season’s final-day crowd trouble.
French football’s governing body has formally ratified the scoreline from the abandoned Ligue 1 encounter between FC Nantes and Toulouse at the end of May. The 0-0 deadlock will now stand, while the club faces additional punishment for the disturbances that forced the referee’s hand.
The Ligue de Football Professionnel’s disciplinary committee issued their final decision on Wednesday evening, making the temporary measures permanent. “Following review of the full case file, the committee confirms the final score as recorded at the moment of definitive abandonment (0-0)”, the governing body confirmed in an official statement.
The sanctions handed down include a closed-doors match for Nantes’ first home fixture in Ligue 2 this season, along with a two-game closure of the Loire Stand at the Stade de la Beaujoire. “The committee has also imposed a one-match closed-doors sanction, followed by a two-match closure of the Loire Stand”, the LFP added.
On May 17, with relegation to the second tier already confirmed, the match against Toulouse was abandoned after supporters invaded the pitch in the Loire Stand. Flares were thrown onto the field and order was only restored after a significant police presence. Referee Stéphanie Frappart subsequently announced the definitive abandonment “on prefectural order for safety reasons”.
The Loire Stand closure will impact the first three home games of Nantes’ Ligue 2 campaign, with the team set to play their opening fixture in an empty stadium.
