Niger suspends nine international media outlets over national stability concerns

The Nigerien National Observatory of Communication (ONC), led by Ibrahim Manzo Diallo, announced on Télé Sahel—the national broadcaster—on Friday that nine Francophone and Pan-African media outlets had been suspended in Niger. Authorities cited risks to public order and national cohesion as justification for the decision.

The affected outlets include France 24, Radio France Internationale, Agence France-Presse, TV5Monde, TF1 Info, Jeune Afrique, Mediapart, France Afrique Média, and LSI Africa.

According to the ONC, certain content disseminated by these outlets was deemed “likely to severely undermine public order, national unity, and the stability of Niger’s institutions.” The suspension extends across all broadcasting channels, encompassing satellite feeds, cable networks, websites, digital platforms, and mobile applications. Nigerien authorities now view the media landscape as a strategic component of national security.

This action coincides with heightened emphasis on information sovereignty in Niger, particularly in the western region of Tillabéri—bordering Mali and Burkina Faso—where armed terrorist groups have escalated attacks. Since January 18, 2026, the Islamic State in the Sahel (EIS) has claimed the lives of 31 civilians, including four children, and five captured fighters in two attacks staged in western Niger.

By implementing this measure, the Nigerien government appears to be tightening control over influential media channels perceived as critical to national discourse. Authorities increasingly regard information as a strategic asset, on par with political, diplomatic, and security considerations.

The initiative aligns with ongoing deliberations among the three member states of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES)—Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso—focusing on enhanced cooperation in media regulation and information flow management.
