In a press briefing that captured nationwide attention, Ousmane Sonko, leader of the PASTEF party, delivered a candid assessment of the failed negotiations leading up to the formation of Senegal’s latest government. The fiery exchange shed light on deepening divisions between the party and the presidency, exposing irreconcilable differences in governance priorities.
The breaking point in talks
Sonko revealed that during discussions with President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, it became evident that the government was steering away from the party’s core agenda. He emphasized that PASTEF’s participation had been conditional on being granted significant influence over key decisions—yet this demand was ignored. “In a functioning democracy, the majority must lead,” Sonko asserted. “We should have the right to select the Prime Minister and shape the government’s direction.”
Key disputes uncovered
The negotiations reportedly stalled over critical issues, including public debt management, rising living costs, contract renegotiations, and accountability mechanisms. Justice reform emerged as a particularly contentious topic, with Sonko stating unequivocally that no agreement was reached on this front. The deadlock extended to government composition, where PASTEF’s insistence on holding a majority of cabinet positions was dismissed by the presidency.
Withdrawal from the executive
Faced with the reality that PASTEF would wield minimal influence in the new administration, Sonko announced the party’s decision to withdraw from the government led by Prime Minister Al Amine Lô. “We realized that under these conditions, we would have no say in the decisions being made,” he explained. The move underscores the growing rift between Senegal’s ruling coalition and the opposition, raising concerns about the stability of the new administration.
