Paris security operation escalates during PSG-Arsenal Champions League final
The first arrests took place on Saturday in Paris as the Champions League final between PSG and Arsenal approached, particularly near Porte de Saint-Cloud and on the Champs-Élysées.
Tensions escalated in Paris on Saturday evening as the Champions League final between PSG and Arsenal unfolded. A series of altercations led to multiple arrests near the Parc des Princes, where the match was being broadcast, according to Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez.
Clashes erupt on Champs-Élysées and around key locations
The upper section of the Champs-Élysées was cordoned off, with disappointed PSG supporters gathering at the lower end to watch the match on their phones. Later, arrests were made along the iconic avenue after an incident involving a bus shelter and initial skirmishes between protesters and law enforcement.
Mortar fire was reported in scattered areas, notably on avenue Kléber in the 16th arrondissement. In the 18th arrondissement, groups of masked individuals carrying iron bars were spotted, though no immediate violent actions were recorded at that time.
During the second half of the match, crowd movements were reported near Châtelet and around the Parc des Princes. In both cases, law enforcement deployed tear gas to disperse the gatherings.
10 individuals placed in custody by 19:30
By 19:30, authorities had conducted 1,579 identity checks, resulting in 64 fines. Twenty people were detained, with ten subsequently taken into custody. Authorities also reported the seizure of 24 torches and two mortars, along with damage to a bus shelter on avenue de la Boétie, close to the Champs-Élysées.
Projectiles were also thrown at law enforcement officers near the avenue, where an estimated 4,000 to 5,000 people had gathered during the match, according to police figures.
Near the Parc des Princes, around 150 individuals attempted to force entry through one of the stadium gates. A swift police intervention successfully restored order within moments.
