Saint-Étienne and Nice face crucial Ligue 1 promotion playoff on friday

After a dull first leg where pressure overshadowed performance, AS Saint-Étienne and Nice will face each other again on Friday in a decisive Ligue 1 promotion playoff second leg. The clash at the Allianz Riviera will be played behind closed doors, and after 90 or 120 minutes—or penalty shootout—football fans will finally know which team will secure the 18th spot in next season’s top flight.

When 180 minutes can decide a season’s fate, nerves often get the better of players. That much was evident on Tuesday night during the first leg of the Ligue 1/Ligue 2 playoff between Saint-Étienne and Nice, which ended in a goalless draw. On paper, these two teams were never expected to meet in such high-stakes circumstances. Yet, fear dictated their every move. The statistics spoke volumes: 11 shots, none on target, just 0.41 cumulative expected goals.

The first half was particularly uninspiring. Rare were the moments of genuine danger, with referee Bastien’s whistle serving as the only source of drama. Twice, the official declined to penalize questionable incidents: a heavy contact on Saint-Étienne’s Luan Gadegbeku at the 34th minute and a high challenge by Nice’s Lucas Stassin on Peprah Oppong at the 41st. Beyond those moments, there was little to write home about.

Halftime brought a shift in momentum, though not necessarily in quality. While the technical level remained modest, a few promising sequences stirred the heated atmosphere at Geoffroy-Guichard. Zuriko Davitachvili showcased his skill with a curling effort from the left half-space at the 58th minute, forcing Yéhvann Diouf into a sharp save. Just two minutes later, Augustine Boakye unleashed a powerful volley that soared just over the bar. Maxime Bernauer added to the pressure at the 66th minute. Meanwhile, Nice struggled to assert themselves, with their few counters poorly organized.

Driven by their supporters, Nice’s players under Philippe Montanier pushed forward, but to no avail. Without Elye Wahi—suspended—Claude Puel relied on the pace of Mohamed-Ali Cho. However, the winger was effectively stifled by the Saint-Étienne defensive pairing of Julien Le Cardinal and Bernauer, emblematic of Nice’s lackluster collective display.

Key moment: Boudaoui’s early exit

Hicham Boudaoui’s match lasted just 10 minutes. The Algerian international suffered a brutal clash to the jaw after colliding with Saint-Étienne’s Abdoulaye Kanté. The images left no room for doubt: after attempting to resume play, Boudaoui was replaced by Charles Vanhoutte. His availability for the return leg—and even the FIFA World Cup preparation with Algeria—now hangs in the balance if concussion protocols come into play.

The second leg will unfold at the Allianz Riviera on Friday, behind closed doors following the crowd incidents during the 34th matchday clash against Metz on May 17. After 90, 120 minutes, or a penalty shootout, we will know which of the two teams secures their place in Ligue 1 for the 2026-2027 season. Whether the spectacle lives up to the stakes remains to be seen.
