Senegal journalist faces investigation over controversial remarks about Ousmane Sonko
A prominent journalist in Senegal is under official scrutiny following her public statements about opposition leader Ousmane Sonko. Aïssatou Diop Fall, who heads the news outlet Public SN, has been summoned by the Division spéciale de cybersécurité (DSC) to answer questions about remarks that sparked widespread debate.

In a video statement that drew immediate backlash, Aïssatou Diop Fall expressed a wish for Ousmane Sonko to be abducted by armed extremists. The comment, made during a broadcast, triggered sharp criticism across social media and in public discourse. Recognizing the gravity of her statements, she later issued a public apology, acknowledging that her words were inappropriate and regrettable.
Legal proceedings initiated in Dakar
The investigation was launched following an automatic referral by the prosecutor’s office at the Tribunal de grande instance hors classe de Dakar. The Division spéciale de cybersécurité, a specialized unit within the national police, has been tasked with examining the case. Aïssatou Diop Fall is expected to appear before investigators on Monday to respond to the allegations.
The legal action reflects the government’s growing attention to online discourse and its potential to incite violence or public disorder. While the journalist has taken responsibility for her remarks, authorities have determined that further examination is necessary to assess the full context and intent behind her statements.
