Ousmane Sonko, former Prime Minister and now President of Senegal’s National Assembly, has extended an olive branch to President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, calling for urgent political dialogue. Despite deep political differences, Sonko reassured that his party, Pastef, will not seek to destabilize the newly formed government.

Sonko questions new government’s political legitimacy

In his first public address since his dismissal from government on May 22, Ousmane Sonko delivered pointed criticism of President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s newly appointed cabinet. “A country is a serious matter, and so is its government,” the Pastef leader declared during a press conference in Dakar, arguing that the executive branch lacks “any structured political legitimacy.” He emphasized that the President must acknowledge the institutional balance of power, particularly as Pastef holds a commanding majority in the National Assembly with 130 out of 165 seats.

Pastef pledges support despite criticism

While voicing strong reservations, Sonko clarified that his party would not pursue motions to topple the government. “If Pastef wanted to, this government could fall within 72 hours. But we will not act against it. Instead, we will support it,” he stated. The National Assembly President underscored the critical need to maintain national stability, both to reassure investors and avert a return to the political turmoil that marked previous years.

Call for constructive political engagement

Facing escalating tensions between former allies, Sonko issued a plea for “intelligent and constructive political dialogue.” “We must avoid plunging this country back into the chaos it has endured,” he warned, alluding to the violent unrest that gripped Senegal between 2021 and 2024. While condemning provocations targeting his supporters, he also urged calm among youth, asserting that “to make peace, both sides must engage.”
