Senegal’s Prime Minister Challenges President on Political Funds Oversight
The Prime Minister of Senegal, Ousmane Sonko, publicly challenged the country’s President on Friday during a parliamentary session, citing concerns over the management of political funds. Speaking before lawmakers, Sonko expressed his disagreement with the Head of State’s approach, emphasizing that the current handling of these funds requires urgent review.
Direct confrontation at the National Assembly
During a session dedicated to parliamentary questions, the Prime Minister did not mince words. He stated that the President had made a critical error in the way political funds are being managed. “I strongly disagree with his position,” Sonko declared, adding that he hopes the presidency will reconsider its stance on this matter.
The Prime Minister’s remarks came amid growing scrutiny over the allocation and transparency of public funds used for political purposes. His intervention highlighted the need for stricter oversight to prevent misuse and restore public trust.
Long-standing demands for financial transparency
Sonko reminded the assembly that his political movement has long advocated for greater control over political funding. “Since 2014, we have been pushing for transparency in political funds. Our 2019 manifesto included this demand, and even in 2024, little has changed,” he noted.
He clarified that his party has never called for the elimination of these funds but rather for their proper regulation. “We never suggested abolishing these funds entirely. What we demand is accountability,” he explained, comparing the proposed oversight system to the one in place in France.
Fears of misuse and calls for reform
The Prime Minister dismissed rumors suggesting that these funds might be redirected to the Prime Minister’s office. He pointed out that his administration already manages a substantial fund exceeding one billion West African CFA francs. However, he stressed that the real issue lies in governance and public perception.
“Citizens have long believed that these funds are used to buy political support,” Sonko admitted. He reiterated his commitment to ensuring that every franc allocated to political activities is accounted for and subjected to rigorous scrutiny.
The Prime Minister’s statements underscore a broader debate on financial transparency and governance in Senegal, as the public increasingly demands accountability from its leaders.
