Senegal’s democracy pioneer abdoulaye wade turns 100, sonko pays tribute

On the occasion of his hundredth birthday, Senegal’s former President Abdoulaye Wade was honored by Ousmane Sonko, President of the National Assembly. The tribute came as Wade marks a century of service to the nation.

In a heartfelt message shared on social media, Sonko described Wade’s life as “a century of meaningful existence.” The leader of the Pastef movement acknowledged the challenge of organizing a full-scale national celebration, given the timing with the Tabaski holiday, yet emphasized the depth of public admiration in more personal ways.

“Millions of Senegalese honor him today—not with fanfare, but through quiet prayers and heartfelt reflections,”

Sonko wrote, calling it “perhaps the most sincere tribute of all.”

a legacy rooted in democracy

Sonko went on to highlight Wade’s pivotal role in shaping Senegal’s democratic foundation. He recalled the late leader’s decades-long political journey, from his first election to the National Assembly in 1978 to the historic 2000 presidential transition that ended long-standing rule and ushered in a new era.

“Abdoulaye Wade is without doubt one of the most illustrious architects of Senegalese democracy,”

Sonko declared, underscoring Wade’s enduring impact on the nation’s governance and political culture.

a bond of trust and legacy

Beyond politics, Sonko reflected on the personal relationship he shared with Wade. He spoke of the elder statesman’s “magnanimity” and the rare trust Wade placed in him during critical moments in 2017 and 2019.

“He did not pass on power—he passed on something far greater: trust,”

Sonko wrote, describing the gesture as one only great leaders extend.

Concluding his tribute, he offered prayers for Wade’s well-being and invoked blessings for Senegal’s future, urging the nation to advance while upholding its core values.

“May Allah keep him under His eternal protection. And may Senegal continue to move forward, as Wade always believed—modern, yet rooted in tradition.”
