US embassy urges heightened caution for American citizens in Bamako

The U.S. Embassy in Mali has issued a stern advisory for American citizens in Bamako, urging them to exercise extreme caution when traveling within the capital. The heightened security measures, particularly around the Modibo Keïta International Airport and key districts, are expected to cause delays and potential disruptions to daily commutes.

According to the embassy’s latest security notice, Malian authorities have intensified patrols, established additional checkpoints, and may temporarily close certain roads to bolster safety. These precautions coincide with the upcoming religious holidays, including Aïd al-Adha, scheduled for May 27, prompting officials to advise against non-essential travel until the end of the month.

To ensure safety, the embassy strongly recommends that American nationals avoid crowded areas, protest sites, and unauthorized security barriers. Vigilance is critical—citizens should remain aware of their surroundings and prepare for possible delays. Personal security plans should be reviewed, with updated travel documents kept handy and reliable communication channels maintained at all times.

In the event of an emergency, the embassy advises having a contingency plan, including access to safe shelter locations if circumstances deteriorate. The situation remains fluid, and travelers are encouraged to stay informed through official channels.
