Will French football fans soon enjoy free access to top-flight games?
The prospect of watching a Ligue 1 match every week without a paid subscription is becoming a serious possibility. This potential change stems from an amendment to a bill focused on reforming professional sports, which is currently being debated in the Assemblée nationale. If passed, the legislation could mandate that one fixture per matchday be broadcast on free-to-air television.
At present, supporters must pay to follow the league via the Ligue1+ streaming service, with prices starting at 15 euros per month. This platform currently serves a community of approximately 1 million subscribers. However, this new legislative push aims to make the elite championship more accessible to the general public by removing the paywall for at least one game every week.
