WHO’s role in strengthening Mali’s health sector through NGO partnerships
The World Health Organization (WHO) has led the coordination of health partner interventions in Mali since 2012. In 2025, Mali faces severe humanitarian challenges, with 6.4 million people—28% of the population—requiring urgent assistance. The humanitarian response plan remains underfunded at just 8.5%, with only 6% allocated to health, severely limiting the ability of aid organizations to meet critical needs.
The second reserve allocation from the Humanitarian Fund for Rapid Response Activities (FHRAOC) targets displaced populations affected by armed violence and insecurity, particularly in Gao, Mopti, and Ségou. Health assistance was prioritized for funding following WHO’s advocacy, backed by evidence highlighting the urgent need for essential healthcare access among these vulnerable groups.
