The Union of Journalists of the African Free Press (UJPLA) voices profound concern and strong disapproval regarding the Malian authorities’ decision to prohibit the sale and distribution of Jeune Afrique magazine across the entire national territory of Mali.
The UJPLA views this action as a severe infringement upon press freedom, freedom of expression, and the fundamental right of Malian citizens to access diverse, independent, fair, and open information.
Jeune Afrique stands as a respected pan-African media outlet, which has, for decades, significantly contributed to democratic discourse and the political, economic, and social analysis of the African continent. Its prohibition establishes another dangerous precedent and represents an authoritarian drift that is inconsistent with Mali’s international commitments concerning human rights.
The UJPLA reiterates that press freedom is not a privilege granted by authorities, but an inherent right guaranteed by international conventions, notably the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.
Consequently, the UJPLA:
Unequivocally condemns this arbitrary decision;
Demands the immediate lifting of the ban on Jeune Afrique magazine in Mali;
Calls upon Malian authorities to prioritize dialogue, transparency, and respect for fundamental liberties;
Encourages human rights and press freedom organizations to mobilize against this repressive tendency.
The UJPLA reaffirms its unwavering dedication to press freedom and the safety of journalists throughout the African continent.
