Strengthening peace through transitional justice in Chad
In a significant step toward national reconciliation, Belngar Larmé Jacques, the President of the National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) in Chad, hosted a high-level delegation from the African Union (AU) on Wednesday, June 24. This strategic meeting was centered on reinforcing the country’s transitional justice framework, a move seen as vital for securing long-term peace and social harmony.
The visiting mission was spearheaded by Maria Jose Samba Ovono Obono, who serves as the Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission in Chad. This initiative emerges from a collaborative partnership between the African Union and the International Center for Transitional Justice, specifically designed to foster sustainable resolutions to the historical conflicts that have impacted Chad.
A commitment to technical support and capacity building
During the discussions, Maria Jose Samba Ovono Obono highlighted the indispensable role played by the national human rights body. She noted that the CNDH’s efforts are fundamental to the success of the justice process, which prompted the AU’s direct involvement in N’Djamena.
The Special Representative further detailed the African Union’s planned contributions, confirming that the organization will provide essential technical assistance. This support aims to enhance local capacities, ensuring that transitional justice serves as an effective instrument for building a unified nation and maintaining social cohesion.
Expressing her satisfaction with the depth of the dialogue, Maria Jose Samba Ovono Obono mentioned that the mission provided a clear understanding of the specific obstacles and requirements faced by the CNDH. She concluded by acknowledging the dedication shown by Chad’s leadership and national institutions in their pursuit of enduring peace and stability.
