Algeria and Chad launch 40-megawatt power plant to cement strategic ties

Algeria’s gift of a power plant to Chad marks a new chapter in the strengthening of ties between Algiers and N’Djamena.

Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb, alongside Chad’s Prime Minister and head of government Allamaye Halina, presided over the groundbreaking ceremony for this 40-megawatt solidarity power plant in N’Djamena on Monday.

Sonelgaz International selected to build the plant

The project represents a fresh milestone in deepening Algerian–Chadian relations and follows the high directives of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. The ceremony opened with a detailed technical presentation covering the project’s engineering aspects, implementation stages, and operational outlook, highlighting the infrastructure’s role in boosting energy cooperation between the two nations.

The plant, overseen by the Ministry of Energy and Renewable Energies, is being built by Sonelgaz International, a subsidiary of the Sonelgaz Group. Equipped with gas turbines, the facility aims to meet rising electricity demand and strengthen supply security for the capital N’Djamena and surrounding areas. Acting on President Tebboune’s orders to represent Algeria, Prime Minister Ghrieb underscored the strategic importance of the project, calling it one of the first concrete results of commitments made by the leaders of both countries.

Forging a robust strategic partnership

In his speech, Ghrieb highlighted the special attention President Tebboune gives to strengthening cooperation and solidarity with fellow African nations, and his personal commitment to supporting Chad’s development efforts, especially in vital sectors that improve citizens’ living conditions. He stated that this achievement “reflects the firm political will uniting the leaders of our two brotherly countries” and realizes the aspiration to elevate Algerian–Chadian relations “to the level of a solid strategic partnership built on effective solidarity, shared development, and mutual interests.”

“President Abdelmadjid Tebboune remains committed to reinforcing the bonds of brotherhood between our two peoples and consolidating bilateral cooperation,” he said, adding that this momentum contributes to the shared goal of building “a more integrated and prosperous African space.” For him, this project is one of the first concrete outcomes of the new dynamic sparked by the Chadian president’s official visit to Algeria in April 2026. “The important discussions held with his brother, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, led to ambitious cooperation agreements and programs covering several strategic sectors,” he noted.

Cooperation that serves regional stability

The prime minister also stressed the African dimension of the initiative. “This project reflects Algeria’s deep conviction that effective African cooperation can generate shared development through concrete achievements that directly benefit citizens,” he said. According to him, “the Africa we believe in is one of active solidarity, concrete initiatives, productive investments, and partnerships that create wealth for African peoples.”

This vision fits within a broader approach to continental integration. In this context, Sifi Ghrieb recalled that “Algeria and Chad pay particular attention to major structuring projects. The trans-Saharan road, fiber optic interconnection, and the strengthening of air transport and logistics will help open up our interior regions and create new opportunities for trade and investment,” he emphasized.

African solutions to African problems

Turning to regional issues, the prime minister reaffirmed the convergence of views between Algiers and N’Djamena. “We are determined to continue coordination and consultation on various regional and continental matters,” he assured. He added, “This approach translates our shared conviction about the common destiny of our peoples and the need to promote African solutions to African problems while respecting the sovereignty of states.”

Ghrieb therefore renewed Algeria’s commitment to supporting Chad’s development efforts. “On behalf of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, I reaffirm Algeria’s steadfast commitment to supporting the Republic of Chad and strengthening bilateral partnership for the development, stability, and prosperity of our two countries,” he declared.
