Babacar Ba condemns attempts to smear Ousmane Sonko over Ndiaga Seck case

The detention of political figure Ndiaga Seck has sparked widespread debate, particularly online. Charged with alleged unnatural acts, he was formally indicted by a Louga judge and remanded in custody this week.

Amid the unfolding legal proceedings, several social media users and commentators have sought to link this case to Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko. This strategy has been strongly condemned by Babacar Ba, president of the Forum des Justiciables.

Accusations of smear tactics

In a public statement, Babacar Ba dismissed these attempts as a deliberate ‘attempt to discredit’ the head of government. He emphasized that Sonko, as Prime Minister, represents the authority of the state—making such attacks unacceptable.

“As Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonko embodies the government’s legitimacy. Attempts to tarnish his reputation or undermine his credibility are not only unethical but also undermine the very foundations of a rule-of-law state,” he declared.

Legal case vs. political manipulation

Babacar Ba further argued that the charges against Ndiaga Seck—though serious—should not be exploited to implicate Sonko in any way. He insisted that fabricating associations between unrelated legal matters and political figures violates democratic principles.

“Using a legal case as a pretext to discredit a public official is a dangerous precedent that erodes trust in institutions,” he added. “Such tactics have no place in a society governed by law.”
