Bénin cracks down on transnational crime with arrests of three fugitives

In a decisive move to curb transnational organised crime, Benin’s Republican Police has ramped up cross-border operations to dismantle criminal networks and apprehend fugitives seeking refuge within its borders. The crackdown underscores the nation’s refusal to serve as a safe haven for individuals wanted by international justice systems.

The National Central Bureau of INTERPOL in Cotonou executed a coordinated series of operations from April 13 to 19, 2026, resulting in the capture of three high-profile fugitives actively sought by multiple countries. These arrests highlight Benin’s commitment to global law enforcement collaboration and its proactive stance against criminal impunity.

Three fugitives tracked down and detained

On April 15, authorities arrested a Nigerian national in Cotonou, wanted by his home country for alleged involvement in multiple murder cases in Lagos during 2023 and 2024. The fugitive, whose escape had gained widespread attention in Nigerian media, was located hiding in a Cotonou hotel.

The same day, another operation led to the detention of a suspect at the Bernardin Gantin International Airport. This individual was fleeing from the United States after being charged in a major fraud case, entering Benin in an attempt to evade American justice.

Several days later, on April 19, French authorities’ efforts bore fruit when a transnational organised crime suspect was arrested in Cotonou. The man had constructed multiple fake identities to evade detection, but persistent surveillance by Benin’s specialised police units eventually exposed his deception.

Legal proceedings and international cooperation

Following the arrests, the Nigerian fugitive was handed over to his country’s authorities under the ECOWAS Police Criminal Cooperation Agreement. Meanwhile, extradition procedures for the remaining suspects are underway, reflecting Benin’s strict adherence to regional and international legal frameworks.

These targeted interventions send a clear message: Benin will not tolerate organised crime or provide sanctuary to fugitives, regardless of their nationality or the gravity of their alleged offences. The operations reinforce the nation’s role as a responsible actor in the fight against global criminal networks.

Through relentless vigilance and collaboration with international partners, Benin continues to strengthen its defences against transnational threats, ensuring justice is served across borders.
