Bénin: elite security training launched at Porto-Novo police academy

New advanced training programs to elevate Benin’s security forces

The Porto-Novo National Police College inaugurated a new cycle of preparatory training on May 14, 2026, marking a pivotal step in strengthening Benin’s internal security apparatus. The event, held under the patronage of Inspector General Kokou Brice Allowanou, Director General of the Republican Police, brought together senior military officers, government officials, police leadership, and academic experts.

Divisional Police Commissioner Gilles Yekpe, Director of the National Police College, outlined the program’s dual mission: equipping future leaders with strategic foresight and operational excellence. The curriculum, delivered by seasoned national and international instructors, will focus on policing strategy, human resource management, command leadership, domestic security, and cross-border collaboration.

Inspector General Allowanou emphasized the transformative potential of these advanced diplomas—BESS, DEMES, and the Special State Security Diploma—stressing their role in cultivating a high-caliber security elite. « These programs are not just about acquiring skills; they are about shaping the mindset of tomorrow’s security leaders, » he stated, urging participants to embrace discipline and dedication.

The ceremony concluded with a keynote lecture by the Dean of the Faculty of Law and Political Science at Parakou University, exploring the interplay between rule of law, Republican Police, and evolving security challenges.

By launching these elite training initiatives, the Porto-Novo academy reaffirms Benin’s commitment to modernizing its security institutions and fostering a cadre of professionals capable of navigating complex threats.
