The President of Bénin, Romuald Wadagni, paid a working visit to Lomé this week to reinforce strategic partnerships with Togo’s leadership. During the visit, he met with Togolese President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé to discuss ways of deepening bilateral relations, regional integration, and cross-border security coordination.
This diplomatic engagement in Lomé follows recent high-level visits Mr. Wadagni made to Nigeria, Niger, and Burkina Faso. The visits highlight Bénin’s renewed focus on strengthening West African regional cooperation under his leadership, succeeding Patrice Talon.
Strengthening historical bonds and shared goals
Following the meeting, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to deepening the long-standing ties of friendship and solidarity between Bénin and Togo. They emphasized the importance of sustained political dialogue to strengthen peace, stability, and mutual trust across both nations.
Economic collaboration was also a central topic. Both presidents welcomed the growing volume of trade between their countries and agreed to enhance infrastructure development, streamline cross-border trade, and attract more private investment. These measures aim to foster economic resilience and shared prosperity in the subregion.
Regional integration and security in focus
On regional matters, President Wadagni and President Gnassingbé reaffirmed their commitment to West African integration. They stressed the need for unhindered movement of people, goods, and services across borders. Addressing rising security threats, including terrorism and transnational crime, both leaders pledged to enhance joint security efforts and intelligence sharing.
At the conclusion of the visit, President Wadagni extended a formal invitation to President Gnassingbé for an official state visit to Bénin. The Togolese leader accepted the invitation, and diplomatic teams will now coordinate the details of the visit.
