Benin’s prosecutor mario mètonou showcases judicial expertise at world customs organisation

Invited as an expert to the annual session of the World Customs Organisation (WCO) Council, Special Prosecutor Mario Mètonou represented Benin at a high-level panel in Brussels on Friday, 26 June 2026, dedicated to combating drug trafficking. His participation marked a notable recognition of Benin’s judicial know-how in international cooperation and organised crime fighting.

Before the 187 directors general of customs gathered for this global session, the Beninese magistrate delivered a structured analysis of contemporary mechanisms to counter transnational criminal networks. He underscored the urgent need for close collaboration between judicial authorities and customs administrations — a vital condition to enhance the effectiveness of repression and prevention systems.

In his address, Mario Mètonou also emphasised the central role of international cooperation and information sharing. According to him, these levers are decisive tools to anticipate illicit flows, dismantle organised networks, and sustainably curb drug trafficking, which remains a major threat to state security.

Through the relevance of his contributions and the clarity of his recommendations, the Special Prosecutor illustrated the growing influence of Beninese expertise in this strategic field. His presence at this premier meeting reflects the recognition enjoyed by Benin’s judicial system on the international stage and reaffirms the country’s commitment to regional and global security.
