News. The administration led by Captain Ibrahim Traoré has announced the discovery of an extensive network of corrupt officials within the Ouagadougou Court of Appeal. These judicial officers, apprehended in October, stand accused of facilitating prejudiced rulings in exchange for financial gain.
Significant judicial misconduct in Burkina Faso
Over ten senior magistrates in Burkina Faso, including several chamber presidents, a prosecutor general, and an investigating judge, are facing charges related to corruption, as confirmed by an official statement reviewed by AFP on Thursday.
These arrests, which took place in October, followed a series of hearings that “uncovered a vast network of dishonest individuals within the Ouagadougou Court of Appeal,” reported Captain Farouk Azaria Sorgho, spokesperson for Korag, the body tasked with implementing the “popular progressive revolution” advocated by the military government.

Substantial funds implicated
The spokesperson further stated that “considerable sums of money were exchanged for corrupt practices and undue influence, resulting in prejudiced investigations and biased judgments.” A particular focus is on a corruption case involving ten customs officers, who were acquitted after a dismissal. Korag has labeled this outcome a “judicial farce” and asserts that the decision “undermines the efforts against corruption.”
Military regime pledges intensified anti-corruption efforts
Drawing inspiration from Thomas Sankara, Captain Traoré’s administration, in power since 2022, has positioned the fight against corruption as a cornerstone of its agenda. “We will escalate our campaign against corruption and the impunity of judicial actors,” affirmed Captain Sorgho, while also condemning a “severe systemic breakdown within the justice system.”
The military regime, frequently criticized for suppressing dissenting voices, seeks to project an image of unwavering resolve against internal irregularities that could tarnish its standing.
