Burkina Faso’s popular revolution: promise or deception under Traoré?

L’Arbre à Palabres

The adoption of Burkina Faso’s progressive revolution charter has reignited debates about the nation’s future, while Captain Ibrahim Traoré’s stance on democracy continues to spark controversy. Join the discussion under the Palaver Tree.

Since seizing power in late September 2022, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, leader of Burkina Faso’s military junta, has shown no intention of relinquishing control in the near future. Initially, he presented himself as a temporary leader, yet today’s reality tells a different story. Under his rule, repression has intensified while he claims to uphold the legacy of Burkina Faso’s revolutionary icon, Thomas Sankara.

In late March, the Progressive Popular Revolution Charter (PPRC) was unanimously approved by members of the Transitional Legislative Assembly (TLA), replacing the 2024 Transition Charter. The new charter now serves as the guiding framework for the country’s path forward.

Human rights organization Amnesty International has urgently called on Burkina Faso’s military authorities to reverse their decision to dissolve over a hundred associations, including several human rights groups, without delay.

We will explore these developments under the Palaver Tree with a panel of distinguished guests. Our discussion will also assess the progress of the Alliance of Sahel States, established in September 2023.
