Ousmane Sonko declares PASTEF will not join Senegal’s next government
The leader of PASTEF-Les Patriotes made a significant announcement through a social media statement, clarifying his party’s stance regarding the upcoming government formation.
Ousmane Sonko, leader of PASTEF-Les Patriotes, has made a decisive announcement through a social media statement, following consultations with the President of the Republic.
These discussions, while highlighting some areas of agreement, also underscored persistent disagreements, particularly regarding the role of the majority within the executive framework.
“This morning, a lengthy meeting took place between the President of the Republic and myself,” Sonko stated. “While we confirmed points of convergence, significant disagreements remain, especially concerning the position and role of the majority in the executive structure—details of which remain opaque.”
As a result, PASTEF-Les Patriotes has decided not to participate in the upcoming government or be represented by any ministerial appointees.
Statement from PASTEF’s Executive Committee
Acting in a spirit of responsibility and in line with the commitments of PASTEF-Les Patriotes’ Executive Committee (COMEX), reiterated by President Ousmane Sonko during his parliamentary installation, the party engaged in multiple discussions with the President of the Republic to shape the new government.
During today’s meeting, while some convergences were identified, persistent disagreements emerged—particularly concerning the majority’s role within the executive structure, the specifics of which remain unclear.
Following internal deliberations and further proposals presented to the President of the Republic, no favorable response was received.
Consequently, PASTEF-Les Patriotes will not participate in the upcoming government or be represented by any ministers.
