The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has plunged African football into an unprecedented crisis of confidence by stripping Senegal of their AFCON 2025 title. This contentious decision, following a 0-3 final loss awarded against Senegal, has provoked widespread condemnation from clubs, experts, and international media.

The backlash against CAF’s ruling is intensifying. According to AS, Egyptian club Pharco FC has declared an indefinite boycott of all CAF-organized tournaments, citing the decision against Senegal as “unjust, politically motivated, and contrary to the spirit of sport.”

Beyond Pharco FC, numerous other Egyptian and Algerian clubs have voiced their solidarity with Senegal and are contemplating similar boycotts of future continental competitions. Prominent teams like South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns and Tanzania’s Simba SC have labeled the ruling “shameful,” warning it could establish a dangerous precedent for African football.

The controversy stems from CAF’s judgment that Senegal forfeited the AFCON 2025 final against Morocco with a 0-3 score. Officially, Senegal was deemed to have violated regulations by walking off the pitch in protest of a penalty awarded to Morocco late in regular time.

Adding to the dispute, the match had actually resumed after a 10-minute halt. Senegal returned to the field, maintaining a 1-0 lead after extra time thanks to a goal from Pape Gueye, and even lifted the trophy in Rabat on January 18th.

However, following a formal complaint from Morocco, CAF unexpectedly altered the outcome, declaring Morocco as 3-0 winners and awarding them the championship title.

This reversal immediately sent shockwaves throughout the football world. L’Équipe described it as one of the most “bizarre and controversial” decisions in modern football history, while The Athletic highlighted that such a precedent was unheard of in a continental championship.

Many football experts have also questioned the legitimacy of the decision. They argue that if Senegal had committed a serious offense, the referee and organizers should have halted the match or declared a forfeiture immediately, rather than waiting until after the game concluded to change the result based on Morocco’s appeal.

The Senegalese Football Federation has since confirmed its intention to appeal the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and FIFA. African media outlets have even reported that the Senegalese national team is considering withdrawing from future CAF competitions due to what they perceive as unfair treatment.

This incident severely damages the reputation of African football, especially given that the AFCON stands as the continent’s most prestigious national team competition. There is widespread concern that if this crisis persists, the prestige and competitiveness of CAF-organized tournaments could be significantly jeopardized in the coming years.
