In a bold opinion piece, Cameroonian commentator Alex Nguepi challenges ethnic divisions as a distraction from economic struggles.

“Those who invest their money in building homes, factories, businesses and enterprises owe no explanations to those who chose to remain spectators”, Nguepi asserts.

He emphasizes that no ethnic group has exclusive rights to Cameroon’s cities like Douala or Yaoundé. “The Bamileke community does not need to justify owning property anywhere in the country. Cameroon belongs to all its citizens, not to any single tribe or group.”

Nguepi argues that economic development requires collective effort: “Douala, Yaoundé and other major cities were built through taxes, sacrifices and hard work from millions of Cameroonians from all regions. No one holds a monopoly on Cameroonian citizenship.”

The commentator highlights the Bamileke community’s culture of savings, entrepreneurship and wealth building, contrasting it with consumption habits: “While some spend, others invest. While some seek excuses for their stagnation, others work to secure their children’s future.”

He dismisses attempts to politicize economic success: “It’s absurd to transform community success into a political issue.” The real scandal, according to Nguepi, lies in leaders who perpetuate ethnic divisions to mask poor economic performance.

Nguepi’s message is clear: “Cameroon needs builders, not tribalists.” The nation thrives through entrepreneurs, farmers, industrialists and workers – not through hate speech or divisive rhetoric.

“Let each person build, invest and create wealth. That’s how Cameroon will progress.”

The future belongs to builders, while those sowing division will be left behind.
